“I raise up my voice – not so I can shout, but so that those without a voice can be heard. We cannot succeed when half of us are held back.”
– Malala Yousafzai, Pakistani activist and youngest Nobel Prize laureate
As women’s health providers, International Women’s Day is a special time of the year where we would like to recognize the strong women leaders throughout history across the globe; women whom despite adversity, have triumphed through generations of oppression. Today, our mission is to spread awareness of health options that allow women to keep their uterus and be free of horrendous fibroid symptoms. We are proud to celebrate International Women’s Day by educating women on non-surgical uterine fibroid treatment that lets them take control of both their bodies, and their lives.
Uterine fibroids affect around 80% of women of African American descent and 70% of women of Caucasian descent. Life can be extremely difficult with uterine fibroids. Prolonged menstruation, anemia causing fatigue, pelvic pain, frequent urination, and bloating can negatively affect both a woman’s social and work life. Uterine fibroids can start encroaching on your life causing you to feel hopeless, masked by unbearable symptoms.
According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) uterine fibroids lead to more than 200,000 hysterectomies every year. At USA Fibroid Centers, we offer minimally invasive, outpatient, treatment for uterine fibroids called, Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE). UFE is considered to be the gold standard in fibroid care. Our doctors use ultrasound technology to locate the fibroids in the uterus and determine if you can be a candidate for the UFE procedure. Once the fibroids have been mapped, the myoma is shrunk by inserting a tiny catheter (i.e. tiny tube) into a small incision in the thigh region. The catheter supplies small particles that block the arteries and blood flow, causing the fibroid to ultimately shrink up to 50% in size. Because the procedure only takes between 30-45 minutes, there are no long hospital stays and no use for anything more than a light sedative.
Unlike surgical treatments (hysterectomy and myomectomy) to treat fibroids, UFE allows you to recover in the comfort of your own home and resume normal activities almost immediately. UFE doesn’t force women to make difficult, expensive choices that are ultimately permanent. The majority of women who choose UFE, feel immense relief from their fibroid pain, have shorter and lighter menstrual periods, less frequent urination, and diminished bloating.
Throughout centuries, women’s health issues have not been taken seriously, and their pain has been negated or discounted. Our doctors prioritize their patients’ feelings and concerns, because they know how serious and unbearable uterine fibroid symptoms can truly be. Our main goal is to provide non-surgical procedures in the most transparent way possible, so that all women can feel safe and comfortable at our clinics. UFE is a procedure that changes lives. Before UFE, women were afraid of seeking treatment for uterine fibroids because hysterectomies were their only option. Overall, our doctors strive to bring a healthcare experience that is both empathetic and communicative.
